Mull of Kintyre, oh mist rolling in from the sea

My desire is always to be here

Oh, Mull of Kintyre

From it’s justifiable boast as “whisky capital of the world”, the output and number of distilleries has declined massively. Prohibition in the US led to 30+ distilleries pouring out large volumes (of little quality) to fill up the boats ploughing across the Atlantic.

There is no distinct Campbeltown profile, with a variety of flavours, including within distilleries, especially considering Springbank’s peated Longrow and triple-distilled Hazelburn offerings .

Only the 3 distilleries remain but they actually produced that of 5. Springbank also produces the distinct Islay-style Longrow (Springbank site incorporates the original Longrow distillery) and Hazelburn (a nearby lost distillery), which is triple distilled and unpeated. Glen scotia can typically be considered light & grassy.

  • Glen Scotia
  • Glengyle – Kilkerran
  • Springbank – eponymous, Longrow, Hazelburn

Springbank is the only Scottish distillery where all stages of production are completed 100% on site… these green credentials get a healthy airing in their marketing.
